I purchased Win XP which worked great for several months
and I am now getting a print spooler error. I have 2
printers connected to my computer (HP 5550 and Brother
1240).

I uninstalled both printers hoping that a re-install would
solve the problem but now I'm unable to install either
printer.

Tried to do a error correction re-install of XP but it
requires a password which I can't locate (frankly, I don't
recall using a password when I installed XP over my Win
ME - I do recall having to contact MS for an install code
the first time I re-booted the computer (internet info for
the install wouldn't work!) - a real hassle.

Any help in solving the problem would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks

a) If you didn't enter a password when installing XP, try using a blank
one.

b) I don't believe what you were doing was a Repair Installation. I think
you were trying to access the Recovery Console.

c) A Repair Installation goes as follows:

Boot with the XP CD. Ignore the F2 for the Recovery Console. Go through
the F8 to accept the EULA. When XP looks for and finds itself on the hard
drive, it will offer a Repair Installation. It's just like reinstalling it
over itself. All other applications/documents/games etc should be safe and
secure.

d) Did you uninstall the printers totally, including the drivers from Server
Properties. See the following:

There are three separate steps and all three must be complete for XP to
'see' the new drivers.

Disconnect the printer.

Go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove programs and uninstall any printer
software.

Then go to Printers & Faxes and right click and delete your printer.

Reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer. Go back to Printers & Faxes
in the Control Panel and from the toolbar, select File, Server Properties.

In the drivers tab, delete all the entries for the printer.

Reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer.

Download a new set of drivers from the printer manufacturer's website

Follow the instructions at the printer manufacturer's website and only
connect the printer when the software tells you to do so.
