Hi gb,

The drivers are included on the WinXP disk. I found that I had to install the drivers "manually", that is, I had to select the drivers from the list of printers on the disk. The automatic detection of the printer did not work in XP.

But you will be disappointed to find out that the grey-scale printing on this old, but nice printer has been crippled in WinXP. Your graphics will not look nearly as good as they have in the past. If you can find the settings in the overly complicated printer settings windows, I suggest you try the "Supercell" dithering setting for the best output.

After you experience that (poor) output. I encourage you to ask HP to furnish a driver update for your printer. Many of us that have IIIP printers are disapointed that this printer has been deemed obsolete before it's time, and won't be supported by HP anymore. I've been trying to convince HP that a driver patch for the grey-scale printing in HP to be released. This printer is still used by lots of people, and I hope they'll consider another driver patch.

Tell HP that you use their cartridges, and that you like their products. But tell them you want to keep using this robust printer for black and white printing. I have posted a few messages about this. Search the archives for my message starting with "Enough!" and add your name to the list of people who want a driver upgrade. Maybe it will help. Please do NOT flame against, or insult the good people here who work for HP and are helping people with their problems. That will not "support" our cause.

Thanks
Lynn Nixter

Try these steps to install the printer:

Go to Start, then control panel, then printers and faxes, then add printer.

When the Add printer wizard starts up, click on "Next", then click on the box (or circle) next to "Local printer attached to this computer", and uncheck the box that says "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer".

Click "Next".

In the next window select the port that you want to use (usually LPT1) and click "Next". THEN the list of printers window should pop up. On the left side, scroll down to "HP" and click on "HP" to select it. When you do that, on the right side, a list of HP printers will show up.

Scroll down the list of printers on the right side until you see the "HP LaserJet IIIP. Select this printer and click "Next". Windows will install the driver.
